A Q about net usage

got question, just got a letter from BT telling us we have used, 17 gigs already this month on the net when we are only allowed 15 gigs per month. i counted my downloads and they came to just over 1 gig. i cant think what has bumped it up? does internet radio bump up usage, or youtube, or webcams? what is it i just dont know?

I could be wrong and im sure there are some IT guys on here who will put me right if I am but I didn't think that streaming (watching you tube vids etc) used up your available usage.

I thought it was how much you physically download that was monitored.

As I said, I could quite easily be wrong.
 
It's blooming well everything, so disable your plugins or go back to Lynx and enjoy the text content and ASCII art the Web was designed for. You too can save a polar bear!
 
could watching football have really boosted usage?
 
YouTube is over 2MB per minute, so it would be about 4 hours per day of constant toobing to use your 15GB. The footie is surely better quality = less viewing time for the same bandwidth allowance.
 
if im right buy saying everything you look at is counted every time you veiw a new page that is counted weather it kb mb or gb's then when you stream or down load that just bumps it up
 
Also if you are using wireless internet, make sure its secure and permission is locked to those machines that actually use it. Otherwise your next door neighbour or some bloke in the street could use your connection and use your allowance up.

WEP/WPA plus MAC address filtering. People could still crack it but they need to be more determined. Also change your routers default username and password !
 
Uploads aren't normally included in usage allowances but everything else is - browsing, email, radio, vids, all of it.
 
this is the reason why i always go for a unlimited package.

Unlimited are the worse.. theres no such thing so will always be fair use policy.. your better with a limit


Yes its everyhting you look at on your cmputer... it has to be downloaded to your computer for you to view it so..it counts..

This includes email ... and this very thread your reading now is ironicaly adding to your data usage :)

Trouble with that is the cache will fill up, but in IE go to :-
Tools
Internet Options
General Tab
Browser history - Settings
Set to never look for newer versions of web pages.

You'll also find a few things under the Advanced tab to turn off.

Don't think any of that will make a massive difference though.

Can i ask why you need to do this, is it that important ? and if so how do you do it :)

I'm assuming you mean the pass code that comes on a small piece of card with your router in the case of sky, if so how do you change your sky router name and pass-code ?

Oh yes they are! It is the total traffic.

watching tv/youtube/radio etc all eat your usage.

I'll have to disagree there... Yes, there will always be a Fair Use policy in place no matter what your package, Unlimited actually means "We don't really mind how much you download, as long as you keep your heavy downloading to non-peak hours"

I may download one or two *cough* Linux ISOs *cough* from time to time, and I can blow through 150GB a month without breaking a sweat sometimes, but because I schedule it for the wee hours of the morning, my ISP doesn't give a monkeys. And my broadband bill is £5 a month.

Personally, I don't rate BT as an ISP, and would never recommend them to anyone, for exactly the reason the OP is telling us about.

really.. I think you will find that there is no such thing as unlimited.. no matter how you try to dress it up.. and no matter what time of the day it is you will be blocked if you go over what a company thinks is fair..

How can a company offer unlimited when theres no such thing? :)

How about all night long downloading every night of every week of every month.. really spanking it all year round..

unlimited doesnt mean unlimited.. you half agree yourself.. so why leave it open to what the company may or may not decide... get a deal with a limit then you know where you stand.. a limit your happy with :)


I am with bt 5 quid a month btw... i dont do any heavy downloading.. i would reccomend it to anyone :)

Most routers have a user of admin and a password of password. They also normally default to the base IP address 192.168.0.1 or similar.

If someone next door or on the street outdoors can detect your wireless network, if you're using default settings it takes them a lot less time to crack your system.

Most people won't try to break in, but someone may be tempted to use your internet service rather than theirs deliberately or even accidentally if they click the wrong button and your system isn't secure.

Ok see your point and thanks for the info, so how do you change it from the default settings that came with "Sky"

Yea, they ususally stick something in their terms where you cannot inhibit other peoples usage of the service. The bandwidth may be unlimited but as soon as you run something that puts too much CPU/Memory load on the server they can take it down.
Had this happen to me a while back when I was running a site that unexpectedly got a LOT more visitors than I initially anticipated. The bandwidth never went above about 2.5gb in the week but as it was an sql/php site the server load just kept increasing!
 
As some have already said, it is indeed everything that you veiw, stream and download. I tried to my monitor mine with this but found it a bit unreliable, so you could try out that other program that was linked to.
reddeathdrinker is correct about the unlimited system. I've got virgin which records how much you download during peak hours (4-9) adds it up and then limits you if you are in the top 5%. Otherwise you can go nuts and they dont care but since my connection is relatively quick i'd only be downloading for short periods of time anyway.

Imo, if you live in the town/city with virgin available they are the people to go with, cable is a million times better because they can give you exactly the speed you pay for, and if it's 20meg, its just a flick of a switch for them, otherwise you will probably always be limited by the physical cable when using adsl.
