A suitable replacement for a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8

I'd like a little more reach on my walkabout lens and while the Tamron is excellent for everything upto 50mm it's not quite long enough.

I'd like something wide with a reach of around 100mm+

To fit a Canon 40D.

Budget around £600.

The new 15-85 IS- gives you more wide angle and a bit more reach?

or the 18-135 IS, although reviews suggest the 15-85 as the better lens.

you can't get reach beyond 50 ish, starting and 17 and retain the quality I think
24-70 L? or the F4 which goes further?
steer clear of the 17-85. haven't tried the new ones

for price & basics the 28-135 IS is okay I think
