adapter ring for cokin filters

hi all
can anyone enlighten me
recently purchased a long lens with a 77mm thread
I use cokin filters on my mid range zoom with a smaller thread
I realise I need an adapter ring for the 77mm but do I need a new filter holder as well

You just buy the adapter ring, not a new holder.

Actually it's an idea to buy the largest diameter one you need and use step up rings for your small diameter lenses as step up rings are probably going to be cheaper than Cokin rings.

I've just looked and I think a P series holder, if that's what you have, is ok up to 82mm.

Just looked at prices and the Cokin rings seem to be about £12 but a step up ring is usually a lot less.
