Advice for a prime len on D300

Hi all,

I just recently acquired a D300 and am looking for a prime len to go with it, general purpose kind of :D

I'm looking at the 35 F2 but would appreciate any input otherwise. 50 F1.8 or 50 F1.4 doesn't seem wide enough on a crop body for me. I'm also thinking of a 17-50 Tamron (hole in the wallet atm :D), but the joy of using a prime is just too much and I can't insist having one on the D300 for walking around the street :D

Any advice would be welcome!

I had a 50, f/1.4 - it's a fabulous lens, but you're right, it's not wide enough really for a walkabout. Ideal for portraits though on a crop body. I use the 17-50mm Tamron and it very quickly became my favourite lens, I'd reccomend it highly. It's not quite as sharp a the prime, but it's a lot more useable. But if it's a prime you're after I'd suggest you go for a 35mm.

Anything between 28mm to 35mm would be fine as a general walkabout prime lens. On a crop body I agree that 50mm is just that bit too long for this.

I'm afraid I know little to nothing about Nikon lenses though, so I'd better shut up about specific ones :)

cheers

Thanks guys :) That does sound like a 17-50 would get me a very long way then :D I was originally thinking of Nikon 14-24 + 50/1.4 to go with my Sigma 70-200 MKI, but that would seriously put me in trouble with my bank :D

Often hear good things about the Tamron 17-50. If you do want a prime you should look at the Nikon 35/1.8 AFS -- near 'normal' field of view on a DX body.
