Just brought a canon 5d mk11 ;) i have got a 50d backup. what are great lenes for it, i have a canon 24-70 L2,8 and a canon 24-105 Lf4 I do the odd wedding but a lot of marshal arts awards. Considering the 70-200 is 2.8 any advice thanks

For starters, unless money is no object, I'd sell one of the lenses you've already got (preferably the 24-105) as there's so much overlap between them there's no point in having both. Then you could put the money towards something like the 70-200 f/2.8, which would be great for indoor sports and weddings, and would compliment your 24-70 (y)

you get paid right? so drop and smash the 5d2 and 24-70 then you still have a 24-105 on a 50d, spares are amazing ;)

like atm I have loads of primes, but I'm gonna buy a zoom too so if I break something I can keep going ditto the 2 bodies and many flashes

Yes I get paid. why drop the d5 and 24-70 ? I know they are close and overlap but, the 24-70 is on the d5 and the 24-105 really nice on the 50d. i like the 2.8 on the 5d selling all my old backup gear. Canon 400d 18-55 sigma 70-300 and a 2 month old canon 28-135. so theres a few quid towards a new lens.

My 2nd shooter at a wedding I photographed at the weekend used a 5D mkII with a 70-200 f2.8is and its produced some stunning shots. I'd certainly go down that route.

But not the other way around? My point was that with a combo like the 24-70 and 70-200 f/2.8 (IS or no) you kind of render the 24-105 redundant. There's definitely a case for back up bodies for wedding photography, but not so much for near-duplicate lenses, and expensive ones that could be exchanged for something more useful at that.

 Well, if you must keep both, why not compliment them with a 70-200 f4 IS (for the 5D) and a 70-200 f/2.8 IS (for the 50D) while you're at it. :cautious::LOL:

I also use a 5dmkII with Canon 24-70 2.8 and recently got the 70-200 2.8 is.

The 70-200 is amazing, definitely recommend it.

MMMMMMM looks like more pennys then, anyone know best place to buy ? cheers

I think David was meaning IF you dropped the 5D with 24-70 lens on it and it smashed you would have the 50D with 24-105 as backup. :)

Definitely fair enough, I did get his point! Ideally it would be lovely to have back up copies of a variety of lenses and bodies for every occasion, but I got the impression that the OP isn't quite a full-time pro, hence my query as to whether money was an object or not. Even if he was, according to his camera bag he also has an 18-55 and a 28-135, which is a spare each for both of his bodies, which is why I think having a total of four standard zooms is maybe a little too much back up in one area, and he could perhaps trade one in and save a bit of dosh (y)

It was Ralphmyster, who I think did not get David's point - he though he was meaning get
rid of the 5D & 24-70 ;)

lol yeah, but David made his point in response to the point I made about not needing a 24-70 and a 24-105. Sure the 24-105 can be used as a spare, but I'd use the 28-105 and 18-55 as spares and flog the 24-105 and put the funds towards a 70-200 f/2.8L IS II (y)

well i not yet heard a bad word about this 70-200mm yet. I do know i have a lot of overlap with my lenes. its nice to have decent backups just in case i think .
