Is there one that does need to?

Unless the 7D is very different to all the other EOS cameras, the shutter release is via a wire to the side of the camera, and if the release is on the hotshoe it's only for convenience. It could be off the shoe, or on it.
 
Either the RF-602 or the RF-603. I use the RF-602 with a 40D, the RF-603 is the follow-up model and the battery standardisation it introduces probably makes it a very worthwhile step-up. Details at the bottom of this thread (including where to get it, you'll need the correct shutter connection lead as well as the receiver/transmitter or transceiver pair - looks like it should be the C3 connector).
 
Thanks again. I may be completely wrong but these are listed as flash triggers and I'm looking for recommendations for a wireless shutter release with timer (i.e. timed long exposures with camera set to bulb, interval, repeat etc) :shrug:

They're listed as flash triggers, but if you read the description you'll see that they can also work as shutter triggers.. ahh, but you need a timer as well? Not sure in that case. For a timer remote I use a wired model made by Phottix. Neither the RF-602 nor the RF-603 will act as a remote timer.

I have seen wireless remote timers for sale, but as I use a timer remote for long exposures I prefer the wired to the wireless as I have (probably unfounded) concerns about interference.
 
I have a Yongnuo MC36, they are made under a few different makes but are all basically copied of the Canon version which is a lot more expensive.

Search eBay for MC36, they are available either wired or wireless.

I'm really happy with mine

the mc-36r is looking like what Im after, except do you know if the receiver will still work if left off the hotshoe? I'm assuming it has batteries of its own.
