:help: I could really use some opinions please.

My only real hobby is photography and for some time I've been wanting to upgrade to a Canon 7d.. Now, (stay with me on this :D) a German company wants to build several 130m tall wind turbines close to our house :( and I want to make a video about it to put on utube.

Question is this. I can buy a new HD video camera for under £200 or I could treat myself to the 7d. In what way would the 7d be better than a video camera, or indeed would the difference be negligible?

Thanks.

The 7D can produce some excellent video, albeit with certain operating limitations but IQ is superb, sound from the inbuilt mike is erm... adequate, but you can attach a seperate mike. As a camera it is super, it depends whether your interest is video or photography with video. You can certainly produce stuff for YouTube no problem.

I'm no expert and this is one of mine

Thanks Ken. I suppose I'm trying to justify buying a 7d. :D Your utube movie came out well, I guess its time for me to take the plunge..

If you are into photography, and want to dabble in video then the 7D makes perfect sense as you'll benefit all ways - rather than spending money on another gadget - and if you are looking at £200 or under video cams then the 7D will blow those away in terms of IQ.

As mentioned, sound via the built in mic is pretty poor, so look at a hotshoe mounted mic.

Limitations of the 7D video function over a dedicated camcorder will mainly be the lack of constant autofocus (Nikon has just started to introduce this in the D3100 and D7000 but still not up there with a dedicated camcorder IMO).

DSLR HD video is top notch provided you don't mind shooting scenes and editing together - in other words you have to set the camera up for each scene or clip - exposure, focus etc rather than just pressing record and wandering around with the camera in control.

Thank you for the information Alan, thats exactly what I wanted to know. I'm not in a rush to get one so will be able to wait to see if they get any cheaper in the Christmas sales. Can't wait now

Hope not as I have only just bought my 7D :bang:

What normally happens to me is that after waiting for the sales to start, I'll find the price hasn't changed, then after I've bought it the price drops like a stone. :D
