would anyone know if the canon 100mm-400mm loses AF when used with a 1.4 or 2x tc
thanks.
 
1D series only will AF with the centre point with a 1.4x (anything below a 1D won't), no AF on anything with a 2x (unless it's a non-reporting converter or pins are taped)

IQ probably takes a hit as well.
 
Thanks Adam....so a waste of time really with the 5d mkii, can damage be done taping the pins?

Very possibly. It is unlikely that Canon disable it just to be difficult. Electronics does not like to be incorrectly connected.

(Waits for three hundred "Well I have taped mine and it's OK" replies.)
 
I think you can buy none reporting TC's that let you AF at slower apertures without taping pins.

But a lot less light is getting to the AF sensors, so it'll probably be slow and prone to hunting.
 
Don't forget that you can still AF with Liveview even if the maximum aperture is smaller than the body allows for regular phase detect AF.
