AF assist beams on Canon flash

For some reason the AF assist beams on my Canon 580 ex and the 430 ex dont work anymore. I have checked the custom function and they are set to on. But I have just noticed over the last few weeks they dont seem to work. I know they worked at one time as I could see them working in the viewfinder. But it's strange that both have stopped around the same time. Can any custom functions in the camera stop the beam from working.

camera custom functions, AF assist beam 05, 1 doese not emit 2 only ext, fash emits

I turned mine off for speedway.

What AF mode are you using?

On my Nikon D80 and SB-600 the AF Assist beam won't work if I'm in AF-C mode (took me weeks to figure that out)

Sorted it now thanks, the funny thing is I never set the functions to off in the 1st place.
