Yes
I normally always shoot using AF-C however when at a wedding last week I switched to AF-S to take a few photos of some of the small details on the tables such as nameplates and centres etc before photographing the cake details.

I was surprised to find out that once I had focused and recomposed the shutter would not fire.

I understand it shouldnt fire until it has locked focus but it obviously monitors the focus point selected after locking focus to check it is still in focus before firing? Am I right.

The fix is to select one of the other focus points on the camera or switch back to AF-C

I nearly always use AF-S and recompose, focus on subject, recompose and fire. It shouldn't really matter whats in focus after recomposing as it will have already locked.

you can set it to fire if out of cocus in menu, but the easier way is to leave on afc and use the back button for focusing,

Thats exactly what I normally do, was just a bit baffled with this.

It must be disabled in the menu then, I use back button focusing and once focused I cant take the photo unless the focus point used to focus is still in focus at the time I hit the shutter button.

Ah, ok. I don't use back button focusing (my thumbs not long enough, lol) so guess it will behave differently.

just keep it in afc, focus recompose and fire,
its menu a1 for the d300 and d700 could be the same for the d90 set both afc and afs to release.

Yeah think I will do Scott, to be honest the reason I went back button focus was so that I could use AF-C and have the best of everything.
