and now it looks like the mirror isn't operating correctly, it seems ok through the viewfinder (although AF points looks little unusual) and shutter fires ok, but unfortunately there's a big black rectangular box over images that are taken! Is this likely to be uneconomical to repair?

It's obvious something needs to be repaired and the best thing is to let someone have a look and give you an estimate to see if its going to be economical to repair.
 
You might have just dislodged something that is relatively straight forward to sort but as Andrew says, best let the experts take a look and go from there.

Fingers are crossed for you that is only minor.
 
If you fill in the repair form on the nikon site they'll give you a free post label to send it back, you can tell them to give you a quote before they do any work which is cool. Price wise the repairers all seem similar, nikon seem to do it quicker than the in dependants as I guess they have better access to spares
