Alerts not showing on Android

Forgive the lack of technical knowledge, but when I used to look at the home screen on my Android phone screen which shows all the Programmes i have on there, for instance, Facebook, email, text , WhatsApp etc. , whenever there was anything new on them a small circle would appear just above the actual icon, alerting me to the fact that there was a new notification or message. That has stopped happening so to find out if I have anything new I have to open each one, unfortunately I have missed a few. Is there anything in settings that will allow me to reinstate this feature? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Go into Settings/Notifications and select See All. This will give you a list of all the apps that will send you notifications. Select the ones you want and deselect the ones you don't.
