Former world champion Fernando Alonso is poised to leave McLaren after negotiating an early release from his contract, BBC Sport understands.

The departure of the Spaniard, who was deposed last month by Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen, is to be announced by McLaren soon, possibly later on Friday.

Talks were ongoing on Friday morning, but Alonso's manager Luis Garcia Abad refused to comment.

Several teams are interested in signing the double champion for 2008.

Red Bull and Renault are the favourites to sign him for next season.

And BBC Sport understands Red Bull are the more likely option.

Alonso's relationship with McLaren soured following a series of rows with team boss Ron Dennis this season.

I've heard that he will get a 1 yr contract with a lesser but rich team, in order to line himself up with Ferrari for the 2009 season.
