Hi all,

just purchased a aony alpha 200 DSLR as a beginner (happy snapper) and have got the standard Kit lens. 18-70mm. Im looking at possibly doing some sport photography but an really unsure about when lens to get.

can anyone offer any advice

The old Minolta 70-210 f/4 known as the Beer can (say that without sounding like a Jamaican saying bacon :D) is a great lens and can be picked up pretty cheap 2nd hand, the constant f/4 aperture is very handy indeed and would put this lens much higher up the list compared to the cheap modern zooms.

I have the Tamron 70-300 with my A200 and for sport, I fnd the autofocus a lttle frustratringly slow. Had a bad time with today trying to photograph runners in the London Marathon.
So to be honest I'd recommend something else.
 
Are you talking about indoor or outdoor sports?

For outdoor I would say you can get away with f4 and above so Sony Sal 70-300G is perfect.

For indoors you will need fast glass f2.8 or bigger so the Sony 70-200 will be just right.

These lenses above are not cheap but they are amazing
