I've read through the search results and really found anything recent so hoping you guys can help.

I'm in the process of decorating my flat and would like a large image printed on aluminium, it's an image of a car and think the metallic finish would suit.

I'm looking to print large 120 on the long side so expecting a hefty bill but haven't seen many posts on happy aluminium prints. Photo lounge appear to be a favourite as the can do custom sizes and print directly to the aluminium which appeals.

Is there anyone on here who has had some prints done recently who could offer any recommendations?

Saw a stunning example at the Loxley stand at Focus....I get the feeling some photos will lend themselves more to it than others. The one on the stand was very vibrant and worked really well, not sure how the effect would work on more natural shots.

Should have said '120cm' as a minimum although make look to go larger, will have a look at loxleys site :)

Try printmyimage at Nottigham, the guys their are being really helpful to me and they print directly onto most metals they also batten the back so it is ready to hand, brilliant and helpful

Just had a 36 x 24 inch aluminium print delivered from Loxley. It's great, really striking - mind you that could just be my photograph on it :p

Could you possible upload a pic of it please :)

A picture of a picture will not really do it justice... Plus it's gone out to the client now - sorry.

A 12x10 is only about £35 from loxley - so give it a go !

hi everyone

I'm thinking of getting some of these done too for a new house, any recommendations on suppliers? Loxley looks like most recommended?

(I'd ideally like printing on metal, rather than prints fixed to a metal background)

How does metallic finish paper printing compare to printing on metal?

thanks for those :)

It seems you have to be quite careful about choosing products where:

- the image is printed directly onto metal (which is what i'd like)
- the image printed onto 'metallic' paper
- the image printed onto 'regular' paper, which is then fixed to a metal backing

Take a look at www.whitewall.com they print to aluminium and perspex

I've had a couple of prints done by these with the acrylic glass finish. Excellent quality although a bit pricey. I had the same image printed one aluminium and one with acrylic glass finish. The glass finish is more vibrant than just directly on aluminium.

Hi. I would recommend www.photoworld.co.uk. I work for CeWe Color and we print the aluminium prints for photoworld. We print for Jessops also. I've just had 3 done for my house. Biggest size is 50 x 75 cm. They are awesome!!

are the prints, which are printed directly onto metal, good looking?

i'm thinking some nice night shots of Vegas will look pretty good in that finish :)

a lot of the places which promote aluminium printing, seem to be prints put on regular paper, which is then fixed to an aluminium backing/frame?

Your photo is printed on*photo paper and mounted on aluminium dibond with top-quality adhesive foil.
This material is made up of a plastic core and two sheets of aluminium. Light, robust and long-lasting, these aluminium prints can be used in all sorts of ways.

thanks Sarah, but I'd be interested in the prints directly onto aluminium

Look at some samples first - I found quite a wide variation in quality and finish when I was looking last year

do you know of anywhere which sends out small samples? don't think anywhere locally does such printing, and we don't really get exhibitions/trade shows in these 'ere parts!

printmyimages.co.uk.
The guys ar eincredibly helpful, can do most any size print directly on to metal not print on paper and stck that to a sheet of metal and supply ready to hang

Hi Ben - I just spoke to companies I was interested in and discussed my project in detail. When they know you are serious - they will send out a range of samples.

I went for a brushed aluminium finish in the end as it suited my project and was very pleased with the results.

I have to say the price range and quality varied enormously for the same project from company to company - so it really does pay to shop around for the quality, finish and price you want.

thanks Rhody (y) I might fire off a couple of emails and ask... even if it was just to send a couple of 2" square pieces in the post, that would give me an idea :)

can i ask who you went with in the end, or who seemed to offer best value for money?

I received several samples in the end from the companies I approached - some were coaster size right up to some glorious A5 and A4 pieces.

I used Whitewall for standard aluminium but had to go a specialist for the brushed aluminium effect. As it was a special order (for brushed aluminium) there was a minimum order of £500 and at the time Whitewall did not offer this finish - things may have changed by now though.

Best value for money? - that's really hard to say and it depends what you want it for. The balance between quality and price varies between personal tastes and customer's requirements. All I can say is, I never buy on price alone - it's a recipe for disaster. I always look for a good product at a fair price so if there is a problem I know the supplier will be there for me.

I recently ordered a canvas by post - as a gift for a 50th birthday - so time and quality were important to me.

When it arrived, it was not very well packed and during transit it had been damaged. I contacted the supplier - they apologized and sent me a replacement - which also arrived damaged. They were offering a really competitive price - the product itself was good - but their in transit packing was wasting my time and causing delays for me. The third canvas did however arrive safely - but although their prices and the product were good - it really was not worth the time and effort having to deal with their quality control packing problems.

If I put a value on all the time and frustration I had to spend dealing with these issues - this particular company worked out more expensive in the long run.

you really don't want to say who you used do you rhody :D

Loxley - have asked and they won't sent samples
Whitewall - just waiting to hear back

...anyone else to try?

There is a reason for that - so best via PM not in the forums.

Suffice to say - I have just placed a new photo paper on aluminum order with http://www.busypictures.co.uk/ and am currently talking to a new brushed aluminium supplier - but they have a minimum order of £500 for brushed aluminium work.

fair enough rhody, though i'm sure everyone would benefit from any positive/negative experiences you've had... have looked on busypictures, but can't see alum printing, only alum mounted printing.

That will teach me to rush a reply in my lunch hour - sorry. I have indeed ordered some aluminium mounted prints - not dibond (now corrected in my previous post).

I have yet to place the direct to aluminium print order.

The previous company I dealt with gave me the aluminium prints in exchange for taking some PR photos for them - not a negative experience - just a simple exchange of services and everyone was happy.
