Just looking for some good info and cool things to photograph while im there
My wife is desprate to go to anne franks house but apart from that weve not made and plans to do anything

the house architechture is really cool. Lots of tall, skinny buildings with interesting features. The flower markets are neat. The plazas are great for people watching.

Just remember no photos in the red light district.

Thanks,
Rick

Is that the law or just to keep your camera in 1 piece?

Keeps your camera in one piece and they are very good at spotting, not even worth trying to shoot from hip. In fact, I out mine away completely when we walked through the red light district

Is the red light district any worse than londons streets?

Luckly i can look after myself but mite take my compact just incase

Lucky man, it's ages since I've been to Amsterdam.

We use to enjoy going to Boom Chicago http://www.boomchicago.nl/boomchicago/
worth reading the Amsterdam Info on that site.

I seem to remember Tram 20 went on a circular tour, so it was like a cheap tour of the city, got a vague recollection they were going to stop running it.

I have been to Amsterdam a couple of times and even though I am familiar with law enforcement, some of the back streets in the red light area can be intimidating late at night. My wife at the time was actually a bit scared. When I was last there we were offered plenty of class A drugs as well as the 'softer' drugs just when wandering down the road and some of the offers were not particularly polite! I would suggest if you are going into the red light district late at night keep your wits about you and valuables, including camera, out of sight.

Some recommended architecture

I could send you off looking for Theo Bosch and Aldo van Eyck buildings, but I suspect they're not for everyone :)

Cheers for all the info guys

On a side note what are the rules on photography in churches mainly in the uk i mean?

Went to Amsterdam a few years ago, wife was the same, "must go to Anne Franks house" ............ A queue with about 140 people in it was left for a few hours, finally gave in and returned ................................ What a waste of money, time and breath. Might just as well have loked at the model in the entrance, at least it was a furnished model. The house is just an empty house with a few pictures etc on the walls, an old sink in the kitchen, bare boards everywhere.
Might just be me but it would have surely not been to difficult to recreate at least a few of the rooms (not that hard to get wartime furniture) to give some sense of atmosphere ........ they must have known what was where as they have made a model .............. Even my wife who was really into the visit was very dissappointed. There is a tag on section which included the atomic bombs on Japan which was by far and away more interesting .... and moving.

As you can tell, not that impressed with A/F house ........ but others may have a different opinion.

Enjoy the rest of it though.

Dave ....

Totally agree with above Anne franks museum complete pants and spent shed loads of time waiting to get in..does not justify the terrible time the family went through and the risks she took later on.
Great place Amsterdam though some brilliantly friendly people and pubs are great..hopefully you have booked into a decent place cause there are some really dodgy places to stay..they advertise how fab they are but when you get there its not so good :'( especially in the centre ... boat trip is good and somre of the little cafe's are fine :)

I agree regarding Anne Frank museum. I went there about 25 years ago and it's now, well, turned into an industry, if you like. VERY long queue and it's lost some of the personal feel.

There are some really cool back streets and small intimate cafes.

Enjoy....

the van tough museum is good. I was there in july for my stag do and tbh the atmosphere was brilliant and also the safest I've ever felt it. The police presence i think has made it better. Going back for another stag do. Don't bother with the sex museum totally a waste of time unless u want a laugh. the Heineken museum is meant to be brilliant as well
