Annoying screen changer

One of my XP desktops has an annoying issue whereby closing a programme will often cause the screen to close via a slow downward 'blinds' action. As the screen closes it leaves behing the blue screen that is normally populated with desktop icons but without the icons.
When it completes its travel to the bottom there is a short delay whilst the desktop icons are repopulated.
I have run Spybot, Malwarebytes, CCleaner and Kaspersky and nothing is found, even done a Tuneup Utilities run but nothing 'evil' is showing up and nothing removes the problem.
I am assuming that something has installed itself or made a change to my settings but what and where to check next? :shrug:

Anyone any ideas please?

sounds like a performance issue to me, whats the spec? is it running low on system memory? shared graphics memory? etc

When all else fails, try the obvious
512Mb RAM!
Familiarity breeds ... time for some upgrade.

I came across an XP machine recently with 64Mb of RAM, it should of been in a museum.

Yes, an old P4 used for remote servicing but it's obviously been added to over time and just doesn't have the ability to cope any longer - often miss the obvious!

RAM transplant this afternoon has made all the difference, can't believe it was only 512MB!
