With my upcoming iMac purchase I will obviously have pleant of questions around changing operating systems particulalry with transferring things like Vista Windows Mail, Thunderbird mail, favourites etc and general hints and tips for the life changing experience. :)

Can anyone recommend a good Mac forum or websites that are not too technical, I need it kept plain and simple!

I've just done this myself. this was quite useful, the links are saved on my Mac not on this lappy, so I can't get at them now, but, unless someone beats me to it, I'll post them up later. I found it quite easy using a USB hard drive. Apple Mail, from what I remember, can import the mail directly. Cowasaki has a thread of Max OSX tips running here.

Thanks everyone, there are some good links there, it's a pity I'm not buying from the Apple store as I would have got them to do it. I did think about posting my numpty questions here but there could be many of them. :D

My main issue is e-mail, for the business I use Vista Windows Mail with lots of folders which I wish to keep if at all possible. I also have Thunderbird for our personal mails which will hopefully be easy enough to transfer if I use Thunderbird on the Mac as well.

Regarding the mail Colin I was ok as I use BTinternet and I have all the mail on the server, I am not too sure about the transferring of all the folders but the easiest way to find out is visit the Mac store for a play and grab a member of staff I am sure they will show you how.

This is also worth a look

I'm not sure if this will work going from PC to Mac, but it worked transferring T'bird files from one PC to another.

Find where Thunderbird stores the data files on your machine. I'm on XP so the location may be different on Vista. Copy the whole location to a flash drive. Then install that data on the new computer. Worked fine for me.

Te alternative would be to email all your saved stuff to yourself, and then pick it up on the Mac. You'll need to make sure the server is not set to delete messages from the server after sending. A bit messy I admit but I can't think of any other way. Maybe Cowasaki has a better idea

plus all the other ones mentioned above are also great.

im sure you will love the iMac, i have had mine over a year now and still love it.
