Just wanted to know if it's a good 'un or not.
Thinking of changing my Sigma 150-500 for one.

And would it work with the Kenko 1.4 Pro 300 TC?

The 80-400 has a pretty good image quality but as others have pointed out here many times the AF is slower than the current AF-s lenses. IIRC mine would only work with an older 2X TC as the rear lens on the 80-400 extends out and would clash with any TC which has a lens close to the fixing point.

Just reading reviews at fredmiranda.com and it doesn't look good!
Almost every one says about the poor AF.
IQ has mixed results.
 
IQ is spot on, focus speed is slow, very slow.

I don`t think they will take a TC, rear element sticks out. Sold mine some while back so not sure on the last point.
 
I've been happy with mine. AF may be slower than some newer lenses, but it's not as slow as some would make it out to be. This is an example of internet "knowledge"...where everyone simply repeats a statement until it becomes "fact."

True to a certain extent, it's fast enough to do 'stationery' wildlife but no way would it cope with fast movement as in for example a kite feeding station scenario. I traded mine in for a Nikon 300mm f4 and it is much better for this type of photography, even with a TC attached.
 
As others have said, AF is slow...certainly in comparison to those lenses mentioned. It's usually the subject of many a 'Nikon rumour' regarding an AF-S replacement over the last couple of years, so probably not worth holding your breath (oh Nikon, please prove me wrong!). IQ is best around the f/8 mark, so be aware there some 'bad IQ' reports can be technique and settings related. Lots of other options on the market, but you would be probably wise to have a look at Sigma's superzoom stable....have just sold on my Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 (secondhand prices are around those of a brand new Nikon 80-400mm) whilst there are a few on here who shoot class photos with Siggy's 50-500mm...on a D3 it just might be worth trying and ignore any lens snobs!!
