Anybody got a Tamron 18-200?

I have a Canon 400d with the 18-55 kit lens. I am looking to get a better lens and looking at the Tamron 18-200. Apparently this is a proper 18-200 as it is designed for the smaller sensor cameras? I understand the optics are not going to be as good as a higher end lens but being on a budget would it be better than the kit lens?

Hi

I think you'll need to define better. Core to this will be what you want to use it for, or want to delve into.

So:

1) Purpose of lens: landscapes, macro, portraits, lowlight, wildlife, general walkbout etc.
2) Focal lengh: you seem to want to go to 200mm - is there a reason for this? Reason I ask is if you want
3) What needs to be better from the kit lens?
4) If you are looking to isolate subjects more a lens with a lower f number would be better but may not have the range you want (within budget).
5) what's the budget?

answer this and hopefully you'll get some good suggestions.

thanks for the reply, i'm going to be a bit vague I'm afraid - I use the standard kit lens for everything and have been told I need a new lens to get better pictures as the kit lens is a very basic lens. The Tamron 18-200 is on offer in a local retailer and is very good value and this is the only reason it is an option. This would give me more range than the 18-55 lens but i would like to know if i am better off sticking with the kit lens till i can afford a better quality lens or will the Tamron be better quality

In my experience, the Tamron 18-200 is a little crisper than the kit lens over the comparable focal length, and obviously has the great advantage of the long zoom range. Some folks are quick to dismiss the Sigma, Tamron (and now Canon) hyperzooms, but they are very useful for walkarounds, especially if you're travelling. If you can pick one up for around £150 or so, they're great value. The 18-200mm was the first upgrade over the kit lens I went for, and it served me well. Next stop (and a step up in quality) was the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 - a lovely sharp piece of glass :). Also worth considering second hand for about the same money as the Tamron.
 
the Tamron is £129 new, was a bit worried that at such a cheap price the optics would be no better than the kit lens.

no worries, I have no experience of the lens so will leave it to others to comment on quality but if you get it I hope you enjoy the purchase and don't forget to post to some photos! :)

Hope you don't mind me asking but where have you found it fo £129.
I am looking for the same lens in a Sony fit but can't do better than £169 from Jessops with 10% quidco cashback.
