Seems to be very overlooked, but looks just the ticket for my needs, how does it handle in the real world?

Loved mine, all the versions of it that I had :)
Pros:
ridiculously close focus
very quiet focus
good focal length
very reasonably priced
Sharp IF and ONLY if you get a good copy

Bad:
variable aperture can be annoying, but only on manual
QC is very hit and miss, you need to research well to get a good copy!

What's the build like, will it survive in the wild or will it need bubble wrap?

I have one of these on my 40D, and I really like it. At the time, I couldn't quite afford teh 17-50 2.8's or the 17-40 f/4.
As mentioned above, I'd go with all the plus points. I have a nice sharp copy and I'm very happy with it. I think I'd only get rid of it if I moved to full frame, having already acquired equivalent focal length L glass.

The variable aperture is a little annoying - but it's not the end of the world for a lens with good IQ, decent build and very portable.

Should do the job then, it's going on a Fuji S3 so size isn't so much an issue! In fact this whole camera set up I'm putting together goes against everything I want in a camera system!
