Had the 100mm for a while but never really got on with it, father-in-law absolutely loves it. Eventually swapped it for the 60mm which I much prefer, but father-in-law can't get along with at all (maybe the only differences are down to personal taste). I thought the IQ was pretty similar. Maybe try hiring one for a few days before you decide.
Hi Rob, try a Tamron SP90 Di LD, you might be surprised at the iQ from such a relatively cheap lens, its pretty much always beaten the competition on sharpness and is a joy to use, on my old set up it was hardly ever off the camera!
I doubt very much whether you'll be able to see any noticeable difference in the image resolution between the 60mm and 100mm versions (in most normal applications.
The IS version of the 100mm is certainly better than the non-IS and allows more cropping latitude if 1:1 hasn't got you where you need to be.
(Be aware that there may be some extra costs involved in the 100 IS....different tripod mount and different adapter for Ringlite/Twinlite mounting)
I use the 100mm Macro as I prefer more distance from the subject. But as in most cases it's down to personal choice. I would ask yourself what are you going to gain buy getting the 100mm rather than keeping your 60mm. If not a lot then, save the money. I use the 100mm not just a a macro lens but I think 100mm on a full frame makes a decent portrait lens as well.
IS well that's up to you never found I needed it on the 100mm, as it's fairly light anyway, plus is the IS lens worth the extra £300 to you?
