Anyone using the Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 OS for motorsports?

Hey all.

I wonder if anyone has experience with the Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM for motorsports? How is the focus speed and sharpness ? (from f2.8 to 4,0. I assume that it is sharp at other apertures)
Anybody have any picture examples? Someone with experience with the Sigma 1,4 teleconverter in combination with this lens ? overall user experience?

I now use the 70-200 2.8 VR I (D700), and use it 95% of the time with a 1.7 teleconverter. This is not a good optical combination. I do not use this combination under f8. In low light I have to raise the ISO high, when i need short shutter speeds. DOF is also difficult to get narrow enough at f8. I feel that 120-300 is a perfect focal length to the racetracks I visit (I can get very close to the racetrack almost everywhere).

I need a zoom, and no one else can provide a zoom in this zoom range. Nikon 200-400 is too long at the shortest focal length, and is far beyond my budget.

This is a hobby, which rarely gives a large income for me :-)

Used mine at Silverstone BTCC media day with a 1.4 attached. This was a f8 as already at 1/80 ISO 100 to get blur to get down to f2.8 I would have needed a nuetral density filter.

Hello artyman.

Great picture. How would you say that the focus speed is with and without the 1.4 teleconverter? Compared with eg 70-200 ?.
How is the sharpness at f 2.8 / 3.2 etc?

By panning images, I have no problems using f8, but shooting in turns and when they come straight at me, I need a fast shutter speed.(Depending on how fast the car is driving, 1/320 to 1/1000 second)

I am awaiting arrival of one these (should come tomorrow). From all the information I have gleaned, it will do an admirable job. The Canon prime may be slightly better, but it is 4 times the price !!!

It works well for RU, cricket and football, both with an x1.4 and native, so it should be fine for motor sport, with the usual caveats for head on focusing.

:thankyou:

Keep us updated on how satisfied you are after a test period Lukey1965

Thanks for the links D-pearce92. Looks very good !

Thanks for the info DemiLion !
Looks like there are generally many satisfied people with this lens.

I use this lens for wildlife and it's great but I don't do motor sport. If you want to follow the link it'll take you to POTN forum where there is a 150 plus page thread about it. Don't bother with the first 100 pages as it's mainly speculation about the lens before it was released.

Thanks !
The link does not lead me to the page.. do you have a direct link, or can tell me in what category it is placed under ?

Not shot any cars at f2.8 so cannot really comment on sharpness, but does OK on birds (feathered :D ), focus speed with the 1.4 seems to be on a par with my old 150-500, and I haven't found it lacking. This was an almost head on shot 1/1250 f8 ISO 800
