Aperture - selection tool?

My niece has Aperture on her Macbook... I'm a Photoshop user and so am a bit lost on Aperture. How do you make a selection in Aperture? Say, to selectively sharpen or apply levels tweak etc.

You can't "select" as such, but you can brush on adjustments locally within an image, which may allow you to accomplish the same effect? There's a brush tool shown underneath the image (by default), which you can click on and select the type of adjustment you'd like to brush on. It'll then give you a popup box to change brush settings, and the values for the adjustment you're brushing on will be added to the "adjustments" toolbar on the left.
