Aperture?

Hello all,
I have a nikon D50, I have tried to lower the aperture but it only goes down to 4.5?
I have seen aperture go as low as 2. something, does it depend what lens you got on?
I know this sounds like a dumb question but I am still learning..

different lenses can have lower aperture.
look for the f/number on lenses
f/2.8 and f/1.8 are lower apertures

Never a dumb question, only dumb answers mate

It absolutely depends on what lens you have.
Most standard or 'kit' lens are F4-5.6, so F4 at the wide end, F5.6 at the zoom end.

Sadly, you need to fork out even more ££££££ for a lens which opens up to anything more.

Remember, the lower the f number, the bigger the aperture. The bigger the aperture, the faster the shutter speed you can get, but the shallower the depth of field will be (Also dependent on the distance between camera and subject). There's always a trade off.
