Yes
Apple have today announced the much speculated Magic Trackpad - same idea as the MacBook and MacBook Pro but larger and independent for use on desktops (or laptops where users require a larger trackpad).

US Pricing is $69 so probably around the £50 in the UK.

Also, updated MacPro and a new 27" Cinema Display.

I still find that my gen2 Mac Pro Quad Xeon is still more that powerful enough for any photography software. 12 cores might be useful for rendering 3D video or other intensive tasks but the reality is that in most of our hands it will just spend more of it's time waiting for the user to press the next button !! I would like to see some new features rather than just more and more speed. Adding dual 2.5" slots hooked to the spare SATA ports in addition to the 4 3.5" slots would be a cheap but useful addition. A full range of memory card readers would be useful.

Agree about the speed of current models for most people. But...there will of course come a time when camera files. video clips, software will get bigger and need mroe power. So no harm in giving yourself a little extra time before another upgrade by getting something with lots of power now (I speak as a person who has no desktop right now, so need one. If I had a MacPro already I wouldn't think about getting a new one I doubt).

Can't find any word about iLife '11, apart from suspected release date of 7th August.

I'm still wondering what the 'mystery' application is?

I would think the big news is the price Apple are now charging for the ram upgrades.
4 to 8 GB now only $200, which is much more reasonable than before, but still not the cheapest I guess.

It's only a very small upgrade to the top of the line iMAC

2.8 to 2.93 i7
and a faster graphics card with more graphics memory.

They have also announce a new 27' cinema display for September, which is an iMAC without a computer

Apple unveiled a new 27-inch LED Cinema Display with stunning 2560 x 1440 resolution and 60 percent more screen real estate than the 24-inch LED Cinema Display. Featuring a built-in iSight video camera, microphone and speakers, powered USB 2.0 hub, and universal MagSafe connector, the new LED Cinema Display is an ideal companion for any Mac notebook or desktop.

I ordered one of the refurb imacs on friday, they delivered it yesterday, it's the i5 2.66ghz 4gb 1tb 4850 graphics

when I ordered the spec was still the same but the refurb was £255 off so I felt I was getting something for nothing by buying the refurb.

now they've upped the spec it doesn't seem like such a great deal though I don't suppose i'd notice the difference in spec, i'm probably better off spending £80 on another 4gb of ram than £255 on a better graphics card and a marginal increase in processor speed.

someone convince me i'm right :D

Still sounds like a fantastic deal but if you need that much convincing you'll be happy to hear Apple will take the goods back for a full refund - maybe you could get the same item cheaper now it's been changed?

Here's hoping they will release the proper windows drivers for the trackpad, might be interested in one of those.

That's what i'm wondering

You need to be convinced? Sounds like you got a good deal to me!

But will it get better, I don't imagine they get down to the last old spec iMac in the warehouse before they change the website so they may reduce them further.

I know the trackpad will connect to both 32Bit and 64Bit Windows systems but will work only as a trackpad (no gestures).

Would be good if they could make all the gestures work as I'm forever trying to swipe and scroll on my works Laptop.

Yeap- I thought the gestures etc would work, but only with the apple drivers, which only work with bootcamp?

I am sure they want to keep gestures for themselves. Giving them to Windows users gives that system a boost so I'm not at all surprised. I would have thought about getting one but I have the large intuios so it might not really be ideal. Might be useful on the iMac in the studio though but as I've just spent another £500 at Lencarta I don't have too much left at the moment for further stuff

Seems strange as they would have sold more I would have thought....

Well obviously, but in buying a touchpad, I am not getting an entire system am i?

That is the point entirely... If you love gestures and can't decide between MacOS and Windows then Apple selling a touchpad with gestures for the Windows OS might make you go that way instead and lose their sale of a Mac. They need to keep some things to distinguish between the systems like gestures, ease of use and lack of much malware....

I think I will be ordering a Trackpad next pay day.

It looks like it might be a very useful device, especially for Photoshop work.

Could be useful for when I use my MacBook as a media centre attached to my TV...I can sit in bed with the trackpad rather than having to suffer with a mouse and still go through all my documents and movies.

Also, I think I would prefer a trackpad to a mouse if i could afford an iMac...

Why can't apple release the 21.5" screen in it's own right?! How am I supposed to sneak a 27" past Wife customs?!

Seriously though why not! Will the 24" come down in price?!

Well the bad news is my iMac hasn't even been taken out of the box yet and it's gone down £110 since they delivered it on Monday :(

The good news is I just rang Apple and without any hassle at all they've refunded the £110 difference to my credit card.

This is the kind of customer service I like :)

Couldn't ask for a better result really!

Their customer support is usually very good. Melissa's battery failed a few weeks out of warranty and they replaced it because it had not been over used. Wail's motherboard failed out of warranty and they fixed it anyway. Always good to hear when people are doing things right

For anybody thinking about getting the trackpad, you should consider the Apple Magic Mouse although i think that in same ways, the trackpad is better. I have an iMac 21.5 inch with the magic mouse

Well we went out and got a mac mini today, we sold the wifes macbook to get her an ipad, then I decided I didnt want her using my laptop to play flash games!

out of the box it seems nice (esp hooked up in the living room to the sony bravia!)
that will now become the 'family' computer- mainly to sync itunes with ipad & apple tv upstairs.

I nearly leased a imac for the business the other day- 2 days before this announcement, glad I didnt now!

- and on the apple cust svcs front, we took in a macbook- 2 years out of warranty, and they stil replaced the case FOC, and swapped out our iphones with the tiny cracking around the charging port- loves em i does!!

Does anyone know how easy it is meant to be to put your own solid state hard drive into the iMac and if it will invalidate the warranty? Might want to do that at some point.

It will invalidate the warranty and it involves removing the actual screen panel to get to the drive. Look at IFIXIT for photos.
