It's a nice capture but I think it looks a little flat, some levels adjustment would perk it up a bit maybe?

I'd agree it could use a slight lift to the levels.

I was just thinking if that painting was a photo I'd be suggesting a less cluttered background so it doesn't distract from the subject so much

I just did that and I think it brings the picture to life. I love the subject.

I could see this on a book cover of the man's artwork.
The re-processed one is an improvement.
