Contact Miles Whitehead at MW Camera Repair, he services and repairs about everything there is from late 1800's plate cameras right up until the latest digital gear. Most of us in the film and conventional section have had cameras and lenses serviced by him and he does a fantastic job for a much lower price than a lot of the bigger repair companies charge.

Send him an email and describe the problems, he will give you a rough estimate for the service and if when you send it into him for repair he discovers something else that needs doing or the quote is going to be higher, he'll give you the option of either doing it or him sending it back for the price of the postage. He did a lovely job on Pentax Spotmatic F a few months ago and it probably works just as well as it did when it came out of the factory in 1973 now.

Max, the sad fact of life is that the repair costs are likely to be more than the camera's worth in pure monetary terms BUT the camera's worth far more to you in sentimental terms than £, so is (IMO) worth at least getting a quote for repairs. If the cost is unaffordably high, you may have to reconsider but (again, IMO) it'll be worth spending some cash to keep your memories of your Girlfriend's father alive.

Sadly OP, I am in the same boat. I've been wanting a film camera for ages and very recently purchased a pentax me super. I think I buggered it up somehow or it was on it's way out, but it's broken. 
Hope you get yours fixed. Me, I might just buy a new one and keep the other for spairs.
