Asking permission?

So yesterday I'm sitting waiting for the blood thing in a place with a huge green plant and in frontside is a lady reading the paper. Nice scene so out with the pointnshoot and I leaned over and asked said lady not to worry, I was going to take a pic of the plant and the flash may go off. No problem was the gist of the reply (took quite a bit longer than that to say it though... ) so I pointed and clicked. Problem then was that she was leaning out of the pic looking at the plant when she should have been part of the pic itself. Anyway, I gave it 5 and then got the camera out again - this time she ignored me and I got the shot I wanted.

Is this morally OK?

I daresay that if she was agreeable initially, then there is no need for you to worrry. I expect if she had of objected she would have done so when you took your second image.
I noticed you used the word morally which is totally different to legally.

Well, morally first, to me it's a little more important (let's not go there though). Legally I had not thought of to tell the truth - but since she had given her permission already and she did know about the second shot (raised eyebrows then carried on reading) I assumed legally I was OK. The moral slant was because I think that I might have been - at the very least - sneaky in my method?

She hadn't given permission though (not that she needed to). She said she wasn't fussed you took a shot of the plant.. nothing to do with the shot you took of her.

I wouldn't have asked in the first place though. I just take pictures of people.

OK, but then she was in the shot (or so she thought) because she moved *out* of the first one...

Ordinarily, this would not worry me, but it struck me as something that could provoke a dilemma. Picture probably won't come out anyway but hey - I tried

Still a grey area in my book. On the one hand, its entirely legal to photograph people. On the other I dislike anything that impacts on privacy. If someone stuck a camera in my face and clicked a shot I'd be ****ed off regardless of the legality of it.

In this case it looks like you are wrestling with your conscience. I'd suggest you listen to it and be damned what I or anyone else says.

Sounds like a reasonable subterfuge to get the image you wanted/needed...
No harm done...

Ah - the realist! I think on balance this is the view I shall take away with me. It's the one I like the best anyway... "It wuz reeznibble subterfooj yer 'onner, I 'ad to git the shot!"
