Attaching strap to Giottos plate

I have a Giottos tripod. The plate that attaches to the cameras has a D shaped metal folding loop that you use to tighten the tripod screw up - similar to Manfrotto ones.

I was wondering if that metal loop is strong enough to use as the mount for a strap like a Q Strap or black rapid strap. Then you could simply unclip the strap to use the tripod. Has anyone tried this?

That sounds like it'll work just fine until the day that it doesn't.

That would solve an obvious problem! My Manfrotto loop looks up to the job, but I'd give the loop a light squeeze in a small vice (smooth-faced jaws) to make sure that they were fully home ...

Prob not risk it with a pro dslr and massive lens, though ...

i wouldnt trust the loop myself.its designed to help to tightly screw the plate on, i wouldnt it be designed to be load bearing. the loop is only a curved rod pinched together,it probably wouldnt take much for it to straighten slightly. blackrapid have a replacement screw for the manfrotto plate,much more secure. would this work with your plate?

would camera insurance cover it if the camera did take a fall using the plate like that?
