I tend to inhabit the bird forum here, but when conditions are right, I do a bit of aurora stuff. Just for a change, I'm keen to hear thoughts on my 'other' hobby:

Thank-you Glyn. 'twas indeed a good night, but nothing like the best I've shot which was back in Feb 2014. The mast in the bottom right of the shot is 'Durris' south-west of Aberdeen. The glow beside it is actually the lights from Aberdeen. My vantage point is a hill-top at about 2000ft, far away from roads and towns in Glen Esk.

There was a thick blanket of fog/mist/cloud at ground level that night, so few people had the chance to witness the lights unless they had a decent vantage point. This was the view from the other direction and you can see the extent of the low cloud across the east coast of scotland:

Interesting to note the green tinge shown here was definitely not auroral as it was looking to the south-east. The strongest glow in the distance is the town of Montrose.

Thats quite an impressive shot of the Aurora John, but I really like that 2nd shot, the town lights showing up through the low mist looks very interesting (y)

The first shot is great but the second is really interesting, different to anything I've seen on here.

Thanks! Well, I usually like to be different...... or should that be 'awkward'?....... ah well. ;)

I'd normally have been facing the other way but the fog was such a feature all over the country that night, that it couldn't be ignored. So many people discounted going out to witness the Aurora that night because of it, that I just had to prove to them the hilltops were worth going for. I edited this shot with placenames added to the glows and that went down well in local circles:
