How much of a difference is there between the two? I'm recently back from a trip to Skomer and TBH am disappointed with my attempts at photographing the flying puffins. I used a 50D with a 100-400 and 400 5.6.
I have used the same combo with much better success shooting larger, slower birds such as Kites.
My 50D has been a great camera but is showing its age and hopefully I will soon be in a position to replace it. So any input into the pluses and minuses of the 7D would be great:)
 
I don't have the experience to give a comparison between them, but the 7D I have now is simply superb at focussing quickly and accurately, as well as maintaining focus once it's found a subject.

I suppose one main advantage of the 7D is that it has 19 AF points compared to 9 on the 50D. This would give it much greater sensitivity and tracking ability. Combining that with the fast focussing lenses you've got is simply a match made in heaven! Mine performs brilliantly with my 70-200mm f4L, I'd love to try it with a big prime such as the 400mm.
 
I had the 50D with the 100-400 for a short while before upgrading to the 7D. The focus system on the 7D is faster and more versatile, BUT it is also more complicated. Initially you may be dissapointed until you get your head around it. Be prepared to do some learning.
 
I don't have a 50D but have 40D and 7D and for sure I find the the 7D tracking focus significantly better/faster with both my 100-400 and 24-105.

Ms arad85 is learning photography. I've put the 7D on centre point only whilst she does....
