Whats the best method to back up an iMac with Win 7 installed using bootcamp, win 7 system restore doesnt work when loaded onto an iMac

Im assuming rightly or wrongly that any backup of the full drive must be done in the OSX environment

You could try using something like Carbon Copy Clonner. This tends to copy all the system files as well as the data files. Not sure if it will copy the Win 7 files though. Never need to have Windows installed on my Mac.

I wonder if Time Machine would work as well as you can restore the system completely using this. I know it works with OSX files but again never tried it with Windows.

You could pop over to Mac Rumors and ask there. I'm sure someone has tried and will know the answer

If you are not running Lion have a look at winclone

have used carbon copy cloner and winclone both before.

CCC will copy and entire hard drive to another completely intact so if you are literally just after a full backup of your whole drive then do that.

Winclone takes a virtual windows drive and turns it into a disk image. Use this if you want to just restore the windows bootcamp partition.

Whilst TimeMachine doesn't not backup a bootcamp partition, I was wondering whether if you use VMWare Fusion as well, you can have fusion make a snapshot of its bootcamp partition and backup that with time machine whilst in windows together with the rest?
