Backgrounds.

I recently took this photo of my Granddaughter Millie at a party, fortunately the glass background didn`t completely spoil it.

It did get me thinking though .. are there any rules of thumb as to what colours to use to get the best out of background and subject?

I dont think there are any rules as such, just make sure there are no bright colours in the background to distract the eye, or any lines/objects in the background which look like they could be "cutting through the head" so to say.....
