Backpacks: which one for a 300 f2.8?

I was wondering what people use to transport a 300 f2.8 with 1.4 or 2x TC and gripped camera attached.my current lowepro flipside 400 can take the lens with TC attached but without the grip attached. It's a pain to have to take off the grip every time I put the camera back in the bag. Unfortunately the top of the bag curves in so there is not enough room for the grip to be attached. I was thinking of a dedicated bag, something like a thinktank glass taxi or a tamrac super telephoto bag but I've noticed I would need to attach additional pouches for carrying teleconverters or bits like an air blower. It got me thinking what do others use and what bags would fit this lens whilst not being too big.

Edit: I've tried the bag again, the 1.4 TC fits ok without putting too much pressure on the back of the bag to make it uncomfortable. The 2x TC is too long, although it fits in it puts too much pressure on the back of the bag making it uncomfortable.

Hi I've got almost the same gear as you but a 7D not gripped and use the tamrac super telephoto it's an excellent bag
It is a pain tho that I have to put the tc s and 70-200 lens in side pouches
It's so handy though that I can just unzip the top and am ready to go hood already on
I think the bag is the size it is because if it's any bigger it would be too large for airline carry on luggage I know that it's just in the limit for BA
Edit just had a look and don't think that it would take the 7D with a grip can't test I'm afraid as don't have a grip there's some space but not sure if if there's enough for a gripped body

Rob, you should take a look at the Think Tank Streetwalker Pro or Streetwalker Pro Hardrive (if you want to add a laptop).

They will take a Canon 400 f2.8 with a gripped body, and so you should be OK with a 300 f2.8, a TC and a gripped body. Should also be space for other bits and pieces. See the photo here:

If however, you only want to carry a body, tc and lens combo and have another bag for everything else then the Glass Taxi should also work for the 300 f2.8, or the Glass Limo if you needed bigger glass attached to a body.

Thanks I think I will have to have a look at this one and try it. Maybe a trip out to srs Microsystems may be needed.

Thanks Mike, I think I will take a look at the street walker. The downside of the glass taxi is needing an additional pouch for other bits. These bags are the size I'm looking at, anything bigger seems too big for me.

I'm going to carry on with the flipside 400 for the time being now I've worked out how to fit the camera and lens with 1.4tc. I will just have to fit the 2x TC when I take the camera out of the bag. The 2x TC probably won't get as much use as the 1.4tc so hopefully it won't be a problem too often.
 
Hi Rob, you could look at the Kata backpack and long lens cases. The latter will probably give you the option to keep the hood in place rather than having to reverse it (?). The Kata gear is amazingly well-made, protective and comfy to wear. Just a thought. Gary
 
I use a Think Tank Street Walker Pro with a Nikon 200-400 and a gripped body and it fits well, so a 300 2.8 should fit easily. I also have a Vertex 300 and The Street walker is a much more manageable bag and also more comfortable to carry.
 
I use a Lowerpro 600AW. It will take the camera (with grip), TC, 300 f2.8 plus the hood in shooting position. It takes just a couple of seconds from it being on your back to being ready to use. You can't carry much else (although a couple of Sliplock bags will cope with a few extra lenses) but it's the best way to carry the lens when out shooting.

Tenba: Shootout Sling bag Medium, or Transport (probably the LL400). Great bags, especially for the price.

Once I leave the vehicle I transport my lens/camera via an OpTech Pro Strap unless it's going to be a couple miles to the location. For something like that I'm usually carrying a lot more in a GuraGear Kiboku.
