hi all after reading a few threads on memory cards that fail,is there such a thing as a stand alone hard drive where you can just plug say your sd card in and it will do a backup to the hard drive cheers
 
Canon do the m80 thats an 80gb hdd with a screen to view the pictures
But other makes are available
 
I've got an Epson one, but rarely use it, as I don't particularly trust that either..

From your profile it says you have a Nikon D7100 - this camera has a dual SD card slot doesn't it?

I'm pretty sure you can configure the camera to write your images onto both SD cards. That'll be much cheaper than a dedicated device. Although it won't save your bacon if your camera gets stolen, it will at least give you a glimmer of hope if your SD card decides to die.
 
The thing you are looking for is a Hyperdrive Colorspace UDMAII, basically a sd and cf card reader with a hard drive built in. I bought one of these but used it once and sold it on. It was a little over the top for a hobby and the d7100 can do exactly the same thing without having to pay an extra £200-300.

If you have a d7100 you can directly backup to two memory cards as you shoot, one in each slot. You can also put in an empty memory card and copy a full memory card to it as a third copy of data. I'm going to start do this, 4x 8gb cards in slot 1 and 32gb card in slot 2. I'm then planning on backing up the 32gb card to a 64gb card every evening whilst I'm away and that card stays in the place I'm staying and is not taken with me. Also the 4x 8gb cards are kept in a hard case in my pocket so that I don't lose them if something happens to my camera bag.
 
When I go abroad diving I always had this dilemma and when my colour space died it occurred to me I could buy a windows NetBoot with 500gb drive for under £200 and actually look at the damn pics on it and browse then net, backup again to Dropbox through hotel wifi etc. ultimate solution for me. Also sorted out the images into keepers on the boring flight home. Perfect.
 
My apologies, it's not Epson, thought it was, shows how much I use it!

Its a smart disk photo bank PB40.

Ive just plugged it in for the first time since.. well, the last photo on there was the 25th December 2006!!

So its done alright to keep them on there for that length of time.

Like Stewart, I back up to a netbook. Far better screen for (basic) editing and allows copying to optical disks (with an external drive), external HDD etc. Also allows web access for cloud backup, sharing, printing etc.
 
Agree with netbook idea. You can get them from Facebook groups nowadays for around £50. Not only will it let you backup, you can preview the photos too. What I've done before is take RAW+JPG then edited a few quickly during the wedding breakfast so they were ready in the evening for a slideshow.
 
Colorspace UDMA2?

It's small enough to go in my pocket so doesn't affect my carry-on luggage allowance on flights. Important to me as I'm usually bumping right up against the limit. It also provides a second backup location away from my laptop.
 
thanks all managed to get a decent netbook for £90 so that will do cheers for all replies
