I am sorry to have to do this as I know it is a well-rehearsed topic however my searches haven't yielded any recent threads identifying what is regarded to be the best option for a ballhead on the SLR-Zoom.

I have a Redsnapper for my serious, non-portable photographer however it is too cumbersome for much of my travel photography and so I am going ahead with an SLR-Zoom to handle my D7000 and heaviest lens, a setup rated at about 1.4kg, well within the SLR-Zoom's capabilities. For now I cannot justify the additional expense and compromised portability of the Focus.

I have read mixed reviews about the Joby Ballhead. At £35 it is at roughly the same price point as the Manfrotto 494RC2 which looks a much better offering however it appears much larger. I have seen recommendations for the Redsnapper mini ballhead but I cannot see the one referred to on their website.

Has anything changed since 2011 (the last thread on this topic) or am I still looking between those options? In which case can anyone chip in with their recommendation?

Many thanks

Can't remember exactly which one but I use a small Manfrotto ball head with a QR plate on mine. Keeps all the QR systems the same throughout my kit.
