One of my main photography goals is to get a decent photo of a Barn Owl. I go out with my camera everyday walking the dog and this morning managed to get the closest yet to a Barn Owl. This owl hung around for a good half an hour going from tree to post and back again!

That's a nice shot and good pose but I think it looks too bright. If you could tone that down a bit to get some more texture to the feathers then you have a winner.

Thanks you two, probably overdid the Photoshopping there!!!

Anyone know how i can tone the blown out white patches? I have PSE7.

Nice shot.

Try shooting -1EV (or even -2) if using evaluative metering mode or try spot metering, especially if you are focussed on Barn Owls.

I find that my 500D over exposes and clips often. Once the whites have been blown, you can't recover the detail.

Shot in Jpeg Artyman, never tried Raw!! One day.

SLRUser, thanks for the tip I'll try that next time.

I never used to shoot in RAW, then I started shooting RAW+Jpeg, now I shoot exclusively in RAW.

More time spent post processing/developing, but better detail recovery in my opinion.
