I think i know abit about my camera now but still a few simple questions do spring to mind that i'm not sure on the answer too.

I have canon 350d, with std sandisk 1Gb card.

Wife got me a Extreme III card for xmas, will this have increased my birst rate ?

i'm just thinking the camera hardware is only capable of say 3 fps anyway.

It will still only shoot 3fps but it will write the images a lot faster, this will mean you can take more in a row when you hold the button down. It made a big difference when I upgraded.

If that makes sense?.,,

Basically a slower card won't affect the frame rate as the images are stored in your cameras buffer first, they are then transferred to the card at whatever speed it can handle. If the card is "too slow" the buffer will fill up and then you can't take any further images, if you have a faster card the files will transfer faster than the buffer takes to fill up, so you can take more consecutive shots. Or at least that's how I understand it.
 
As above, if your more of a "Spray and pray" rather then a "single shot" kinda shooter (sorry, COD:MW2 kicking in there) then a faster card will be better for you.

Your normal card will write X amount of images and so the better card will give you one or two more. Also, the "recycle time" for your card to allow you to carry on gunning will be much shorter too
 
It's also worth noting that cards with higher capacity will have slower write speeds.
A 1Gb Sandisk Extreme will write JPG's faster than an 4 Gb Extreme IV in non-UDMA bodies.
