I bought a battery grip for my Canon 500D but the problem is when I remove the little flap that covers the battery the camera turns its self off. So when I put the battery grip on the camera wont turn on. I can remove the grip put a single battery in the camera and it will only turn on if the little battery cover is clipped back on and closed? so how am I supposed to get around the auto shut off when its removed so I can use my grip? Thanks

Managed to get it to turn on now but regardless how tight I have it when I turn it, it loses connection and turns off. I couldnt put it on any tighter and when it moved slightly on the battery side it turns off! The grip is an OPTEKA off Amazon and it had loads of people saying how it was just as good as Canons only cheaper because you werent paying for the name ?!?

Your batteries: sorry but you are putting two in the grip? And they're in good nick and fully charged? The terminals are good and clean? My little experience of battery grips on 3 models suggests they don't need to be stupidly tight. Sorry I can't help more.

Yeah all looks in good order and Ive fully charged them. Ive managed to get it to stay on by wedging a small piece of cardboard on the left side making the battery side to be forced tighter. Not very high-tec but you cant see any difference and its staying on now. Just crazy how tight it has to be, dont think Ive got finger prints now off trying to force it tighter left most of my skin on the grip.

If its on so tight, i would recommend loosening it and re tightening it once a month. Some members here have had issues of leaving their grip on for months, then the dial mechanism breaks, and you will have to destroy the grip to get it off :(

It sounds like a problem with the grip to me. I have the Canon grip and it doesn`t need to be too tight. When you take the battery door off the camera won`t work but when the grip`s in place it should overide this. I can use my camera with 1 or 2 batteries no problem. This is why I would always go Canon for a grip. I don`t mind going for non branded bits and bobs like remotes etc, but for something as substantial as a grip ..........

I know others use non OEM grips without issues, but it`s just me I guess.

If it's new it might be faulty and as you've bought through the mighty Amazon I'd be describing the problem to the vendor and asking for a replacement. And, touch wood, I've not yet had a problem with a non-Canon grip so don't assume it to be a generic quality control problem.

Certainly sounds faulty to me - I'd get it sent back... Again, I've only ever used Canon branded stuff, and never had any issue. I know others use 3rd party with no problems, but it's not for me :) Good luck in resolving it.
