Does anyone know whether it is better to turn the camera off after every shot and on again for the next one, or whether to leave the camera on for the duration of a shoot. I have a notion that turning it on and off constantly will drain the battery more than by leaving it on.

I just leave it on all the time. The auto turn off feature means it will then restart as soon as you touch the shutter button anyway. (y)

I use canon DSLRs 60D,20D and the olny time I switch them off is to change the Batteries or when flying, they are all set to swich to power saving mmode after 15mins of inactivity. The battery life does not seem to be affected and I never have isues with short life

I agree with Janice, also all that on off on off can't be good for the contacts in the switch so just leave it on

I turn mine off because when i used to leave it on i'd sometimes open my bag to see the lcd screen active.
But then i think every button and control on 1D cameras wakes it up from power saving.
A lot of cameras its just the shutter button.
