Beginners Filter Kit

Looking to get into the use of filters to enhance my landscape photography, anyone got any recommendations on a beginners starter kit. Looking for a screw in mount and slot filters kit, only need a 58mm at the moment but would like to be able to upgrade as my lens collection improves.

In terms of filter quality and also price the range goes Cokin > Hitech > Lee

It depends on how keen you are, seeing you've got a website set up to sell images I presume you're pretty keen, I'd then go for Lee.

You'll need a 58mm adaptor ring, foundation kit (filter holder) and filters of your choice, I'd not bother with 1 stop, hard or soft edged depends on preference, I tend to use my 3 stop hard edge most often.

Thanks Mark, I'm not really selling any images yet but the hope is there that I can/will one day. With the scenery and skies up here in the far north of Scotland I think I could benefit from the use of some grad filters.

Would agree 100% with this. Maybe also consider a polariser. There are a couple of options with the lee kit. Neither are cheap though in afraid.

so newbie question...........

Are the different systems interchangeable eg a hitech filter would fit in a cokin or lee holder etc, etc.

Yes, as long as you've got the same size.

Cokin P series = 85mm
Cokin Z Pro & Lee are 100mm
Hitech sell both 85mm and 100mm filters.

As Graham said a CPL is a good investment, but to use it in conjunction with filters starts to get expensive. If you're using 85mm filters Kood and Cokin offer cheap drop in CPLs that fit in a thin slot nearest the lens, if you're on 100mm filters you're looking at the Lee 105mm CPL or Heliopan, both of which are in the £200 region.
