best budget lens for Canon 450D" Please Help"

I was hoping someone would be able to advise me on lens for my recent acquisition,(I am a complete novice)if it was left to me I would end up with something not suitable, I have read online that the lens that come with the canon are satisfactory but there are better alternatives available, obviously i dont want to spend hundreds of pounds, just want my shots to be better,
the lens I currently have are the Canon IS 18-55mm EFS LENS
would love to improve upon these on a budget and maybe some lens with excellent zoom capabilities, up to 250-300mm
any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated,thank in advance for any help given.

I'm afraid no lens will do this for you. ;)

The 55-250mm EF-s is supposed to be great as a budget telephoto, it would make a could pair with your 18-55.

You can get lenses that go from 18-270mm, but you sacrifice image quality.

As per post #3 mate, tell us what you will be shooting, (or hope to shoot) where etc, how much you want to spend, then we can better inform you what to get.
As has already been said, the 55-250mm IS is a cracker of a lens, shoots well above it's price, (I have one) and has a decent top end for a beginer. They can be had 2nd hand for around £115/130 and new for £150 ish.

Cheers to eveyone for there suggestions.that was a quick response, I am pleased you all agree on those 55-250 IS lens, will have to look out for those,
shots I am looking to take are nature,flowers,animals.scenery, also would like some macro shooting. are the lens I currently have any good, reviews for these are not amazing,lol, thanks again for your advice.

The lens you have, the kit 18-55 IS is ok. Not brilliant, but OK. You could try a Raynox DC-R 250 on it to start you off in macro but it (the Raynox) will be MUCH better on the 55-250mm. I use mine that way (very seldom) but it works. The 55-250 gets used for landscape too, as well as the odd bird or two, but you need to get close to the subject (bird).
 
Between the 18-55 and the 55-250 you have a usable range of lens. For true macro there is no such thing as a cheap lens (I believe ;)) However you can acquire some attachments that will assist converting your 'normal' lens to take macro images quite cheaply. Look on the macro forum for examples as not all use dedicated lens.

Remember it is a bad workman who blames his tools ;) Get out there and use what you have, keep practising and remember it is you that is the photographer...the rest are tools.

The 18-55mm IS lens you have is not as bad as folk will make out. Sure the build quality isn't stellar and you need to stop down a little to get more sharpness but considering the cost it is pretty good.

Couple it with the 55-250 IS and you have got a lightweight, sharp usable pair of lenses that will do nearly everything you need them to do.

Macro is the only bit those two lenses cannot do very well. However if you spend a bit of money on a device called a Raynox DC250 which attached to the front of your lens and allows closer focussing.

Just what I was looking for!

I was considering the Tamron 18-270 to replace the bagfull I have now (18-55, 35-105 and 100-200). But the noiseless version is coming in at £500 which is a big outlay atm.

The 55-250 will compliment the wide angle and give my shoulder a rest ;P

Thanks for all the advice (grabbing the DC-R too) and can't wait for it to arrive.
 
Pleasure! Doesn't look like the OP made the purchase, so glad someone else did!
(Unless the OP updates us with any outcome! It WOULD be nice to know!)
 
My advice would be to stick with the kit lens for the time being and just learn how to use the SLR.. Throwing more lenses into the bag now will only complicate things. Master your 18-55 and look to save a little every month for something new towards the year end..

Hi Guys
I took the plunge and bought the 55-250 lenses, got them second hand for 115 quid, not arrived yet but supposed to be in mint condition.
I take onboard what you said about getting used to the 18-55 lenses which is good advice as I am a complete novice, did want to ask 1 more silly question which will make me look very green, uv filters, whats the importance of these and is it a good idea to get for my lenses, which 1's will i need to buy,hope you dont mind me asking such a silly question,thanks again for all the help i have received,its been great

They are for protection only, they do not add anything to digital cameras.
