Sounds like you would be best served with an SLR and kit lens.

The options you have available are too numerous to list without blowing you mind with choices. Your best option is to go to a camera shop and try out Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax DSLR's and see which fits you best and feels most comfortable.

You will also get an idea of how much you will need to budget by doing that.

you'll enjoy the 450D as it is most recent and with more technology, however, the others can be had for under £200 on the forums.
Have a look and keep an eye out.

How much are you expecting to spend, and what do you want to be the aim....also remember, the body is important, but the lenses are more important. You could spent a lot on those, but they will really make a noticeable difference.

I think the first decision you need to make is film or digital... I mean if you are studying photography as one of my friends did they had to do the whole darkroom bit... and I dont mean a computer programme... I mean the red light and chemical trays... I've done it and I have to say its really rewarding!

If you are doing that... a bit of me would suggest you go for a fully manual film camera like a nikon, olympas or my first camera a pentax K1000! I know it sounds mad in this modern day but nothing teaches you quicker about the fundamentals of photography than one of these cameras... you will need to learn fast and once you do your photography will be better for it.... I honestly believe any tog should at least have a camera like this to pick up now and again and play... I just wish you could get something digital a bit like them...and there is something now retro cool about them as well which is always a good image to have as a student.

I would agree with other people that the 450d is a fantastic SLR if you are going digital... expensive though and you will then have to buy at least one other lens... prob a telephoto.
