Better macro with G1, 14-45 & DCR-250

Hi all,

I have been playing around with macro for a couple of years, but on a Fuji S9600 bridge camera and my DCR-250. I recently upgraded to a Panasonic G1 with kit 14-45mm lens and just can't get the magnification I used to have on the Fuji (although the IQ is a billion times better).

I can't justify buying the dedicated macro for ~£750 for the G1, so what are my alternatives ?

The DCR-250 instructions say to always use the longest focal length of the lens it's attached to. Is this right ? Would the 45-200 kit lens give me more magnification, or just an even smaller DOF ?

Any ideas ?

Cheers,
Daniel.

The 45-200 would give you more magnification, and I think a shallower DOF...

This was with the G1 and 45-200 I think at full extension, with a Metz 36 AF external flash.

Another alternative is the Canon FD 50mm 3.5 Macro - can be bought for around £50 (plus the cost of an adapter - around £20)

You could get closer with some extension tubes.

There are also reversing rings and extension tubes for M4/3 that you could use with the 14-45, but I think only with the aperture wide open.

Cheers Graham... needed an excuse to pull the trigger on the 45-200 :D

One on its way !

You get higher mag at longer focal length, that's the way diopter lens like the raynox works.

Normally, the mag you get is focal length/125.

You get 125 when you divide 1000 by the diopter of dcr250, which is +8, i.e. 1000/8 = 125.

but to get the exact magnification, shoot an mm scale ruler.

Can you explain how you do this ?
[I don't mean take a shot of a ruler]

What do I do with the shot ?

BTW - picking up the 45-200 on the way home :D

The G1's sensor size is 17.3 x 13.0 mm from what i found on the net.

If you shoot an mm ruler and you see 17.3mm in the width, then it's 1:1.

If 34.6mm, then it's 1:2

If 8.65mm then 2:1

You get the idea :)

Cool - will give it a go later this evening and report back at various focal lengths on both lenses with the DCR-250 attached.

Presume I set the focus manually to the minimum focusing distance (ie not infinity) and take the shot once the ruler is in focus (by moving the camera / ruler, not the focus ring) ?

I have found figures of 18x13.5mm for the sensor... isn't the internet great

Cheers,
Daniel.
