Hi Tom 2 things spring to mind. Fussy backgrounds, and intruding twigs, both take away from the bird as a subject

I rather like the Tree Sparrow, though getting nearer would help this. Your Woodpigeon is along the right lines, more space to the right of the bird, and i would be tempted to clone out the bright spot to the left.

I feel the first shot of the Coal Tit feeding has the makings of a canny natural history shot, a bit closer and with the bird in the open.

regards brian.

Hey little brother ;)

I like the sparrow too - nice shot :) Colours are lovely on the first shot - nice setting for the long tailed tit. Focus is good on your wood pigeon - nice and sharp with a clean background - this is what you're aiming for :)

Here are some tips from Ali:

Try using a tripod or beanbag to steady your shot - you can borrow mine if you like...or try your monopod.

Try to get a clear shot of the bird when it is in the light - it's all about patience and playing the waiting game!

Keep an eye on foreground and background clutter i.e. keep the shot as simple as possible (bird and single twig)

Try practicing at the feeding station at Low Barns.

Keep it up Tom - good luck (y)
