Some believe that R. J. Mitchell’s design of the Spitfire was inspired by watching seagulls.
At least the wings do resemble those of a gull - or more like a Stuka's, don't you think?
Gull-01.jpg

Standing tall and alone above the rest, the stately figure of Air Chief Marshall Leigh-Mallory watches over 242 Squadron on the mess deck!
Gull-02.jpg

The muster room telephone rings, Bader takes it ... a tense pause … then the order they’ve all been waiting for – SCRAMBLE!!!
Gull-03.jpg

Squadron Leader Douglas Bader and his wingman “Freckles”,
roar above the flight deck as he leads the squadron skywards to do battle with the hun!
Gull-04.jpg

The Rolls Royce Merlin engines scream at the heavens with their power
as they climb into a bright September sky above the English Channel.
Gull-05.jpg

Earphones crackle ...
“Glass Jar Tower to Blue leader, intercept formation approaching Dover bearing one three zero at ten thousand feet - Over.”
Gull-06.jpg

“Roger, Glass Jar Tower, Wilco and out!”
“Stay on my wing Freckles, and keep your eyes peeled for Gerry, he’ll come out of the sun.”
Gull-07.jpg

The battle hardened Canadian grins as he scans the sky around them,
Gull-08.jpg

“Roger, Blue leader, I’ll watch it Sir,” answered the cheery redheaded Canadian!
“Yikes! …there they are Sir, at twelve O’clock -
He-111 bombers with a bf-109 fighter escort ... Let's go get 'em Sir!"
Gull-09.jpg

Bader wheels the Spitfire into a tight left turn to climb above the marauding formation from behind!
Gull-10.jpg

Please know that I disclaim all responsibility for this drivel - My alter ego (who claims to be the reincarnate
of a WWII British fighter ace) has devised the dialog for this dubious series.

To humor it and to avoid a driving it into a psychotic break, I beg you to indulge his fantasies just this once for my sake, puhleeze!
:bonk:

The Spitfire one (y)

( I am not a fan of pasta, but as for steak Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm (y))

Chris, you might be interested to know that when I visited the UK almost 20 yrs ago, one had to search for a butcher's shop.
On the 8th week just a few days before returning to Oz, I became so desperate for a meat hit that I paid £17 Quid for a pound of Prime Scottish Rump
at some fancy delicatessen just a few doors from our flat in Bayswater Road by the Holland Park Underground - Oh what a feeling!:runaway: Sandra got mad but she enjoyed the feast!

Bloody hell Mark!

I bet there were a lot more then, than now,
and there are still three traditional butchers within two miles of me,
That doesn't include the
supermarket "butcher counters" either
but then I don't live in London :D

Hey Chris ... I guess that in the land of concrete cows, Buckinghamshire steak must be pretty hard to get your teeth into, eh? :D

We also have a few of them Downunder!
Murchison00.jpg

These Concrete Cows are located at the rural town of Murchison, Central Victoria, Australia.

LOL!
Mark,
I really thought that MKDC were the only ones daft enough to do something like that,
obviously I was wrong! :D

Daftness abounds and surrounds us Chris :wacky:... only thee and me stand outside of of it, yet sometimes I wonder about  .... er ... hang on, there goes my I phone ....!

hey, thanks heaps guys. will post some photos for sure, and if we enjoy the races it could become an annual trip. hope others will join in next year.

Extremely random but in keeping with the tone of this thread I think :wacky:

Anyway....... excellent story and pics Mark, thoroughly enjoyed them. I live in Crewe and my granddad worked at what was Rolls Royce (now Bentley) and helped to build the Merlin engines for Spits' during the war.
However, I do not like pasta :D

Your granddad must have had an interesting life ... during the Blitz we used to feel for you guys, sending food parcels, clothing and stuff like that. Sandra (my better half) was born in Sussex during the bombing. We Aussies were also committed to the war effort in manufacturing munitions - I was just a kid when WWII began and was in Junior school in 1945 when it ended. :|
However, I do not like pasta :D Andy
:D Then you are probably a MacDonalds kid! :puke:

Cool(y)

While we are swapping random stories of the war
( I am far too young to remember it :) )
My Mum used to paint the "targets" on the spitfires.

Oh and I don't like pasta either :puke:
