Right what the hell is going on?!

I'm using Firefox and then for no reason when I'm just looking around the web (like on here) BANG, up pop's IE with an advert/pop up

Urrmmmmmm why?

I'm not even using IE to search the web and it's getting me :thinking::bang:

Any ways to just "turn off IE" like FOREVER!

I only really use it for when I'm checking what my site looks like in Dreamweaver

Does firefox not use IE as a 'base' like most other browsers?

Some programs embed IE to display web content, like Windows Media Player or Winamp. Also, if you already have spyware on your system, IE will be used to display ads sometimes. It won't just come up of its own accord unless it is called by a program, or you're spywared.

Run malwarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/
 
I know in W7 you can go to Programmes and Features and select "Turn Windows Features on/off"

Uncheck IE8 and you're done.
 
If you aren't running IE, yet are still getting ad popups then you have malware on your system. Run through as many scanners are you can.
 
Yes it certainly sounds like you've got a nasty. I use FF at home and work and no problems.

Do a virus scan.
Also download and run Spybot Search and Destroy and Malwarebytes.

Also consider using Antivir from www.free-av.com instead of McAfee. They also have a removal tool that is worth running
