I have a trip planned for tomorrow and needed the item for that purpose ( carbon Fibre monopod) - Now not only have to cancel my trip, but stay in all day tomorrow awaitimg Parcel Force

I thought as its Tusday and mid day-ish, I'll call them to complain- NO CHANCE the recorded message and live chat both inform me the bloody office is closed and then proceed to give me thier opening hours

It seems to me that independents are themselves driving customers towards the likes of Amazon with their apathy and lackadaisical attitudes.

I for one just don't bother trying any more - it's Amazon every time for me now even if they're a little more expensive at times.

Only yesterday they refunded me for an item that I bought over three months ago as I just wasn't happy with it. No quibbles - they even paid for the return postage.

the issue with amazon is their questionable ethics, questionable balance sheets and tax avoidance.

p.s. this is not "holier than thou" statement, fully sworn amazon prime member here.
But I do like to support good UK shops where possible. I have had nothing but great service from likes of LCE, Wilkinsons and some other camera shops. Wex have been very good to me too.

I agree completely and TBH, I'd rather not use them because of this.

However, I've had no end of trouble with so many other suppliers and have never had a problem with Amazon in around fifteen years of using them - more than 95% of my very regular online purchases are now from them because of it. Good service is just that - good service. Sadly, something forgotten by most UK suppliers for the last ten years or more.

I should add that I can't buy locally as there just isn't anyone to buy from and if there were, then access by wheelchair would be another hurdle to overcome as so few 'smaller' businesses and shops make provision for them.

There are good independents out there who deliver very quickly. Speed Graphic have always lived up to their name. I tried Aperture during the lockdown, a shop I would normally visit in person, and they were very fast. My last three ebay purchases from traders with good feedback were shipped immediately and arrived sooner than the system estimated.

One recurring problem I have with Amazon is the quality of their packaging, especially of large, heavy or fragile items. Specialist shops and small traders often take more trouble. Amazon usually just shove the retail box in one of their (sometimes inadequate) shipping boxes to rattle around with a token twist of brown paper padding. It took me three attempts to get one item in an undamaged state, and I've given up on ordering groceries in glass jars. It's lucky their returns and refund process is so good, apart from using Hermes for home collections.

Things do go wrong sometimes - and they are generally very good from my own experience - but leaving your order until two days before your trip was a bit last minute maybe? And I wouldn't have cancelled the trip - I'd have gone on and had a nice day out - and then dealt with the missed delivery on my return :) Of course - when they say next day delivery - you expect it next day - but if I'd known I was going on a trip since last week - I would also have ordered it last week, as I do know things have a habit of not quite doing what you expect in these current circumstances. (Although things appear to be improving)

Ah yes - packaging and Hermes are both REALLY bad.

I know its frustrating but to be fair I have never had a problem with WEX and often get items next day even I haven't paid for that and wasn't expecting to

<ETA> I gave up on Prime a couple of years ago now because in this area things on Prime next day were sometimes taking 3-5 days to get here. There was a time that if Amazon missed the next day they would give you a free month but they even stopped doing that.

indeed amazon customer service is faultless. I have never had a problem buying and returning and sorting any issues with them.
but they also have a lot more resources and money to throw at it. I think the good UK shops like the ones I mentioned do an admirable job within their limited resources. It sometimes means bearing with them a little bit but I have a lot of time for shops that are trying to do the right thing.

When Wex first started they were cheaper and better than most.
Over the years they have grown and grown and now are just as expensive as everyone else.
IMO their customer service went downhill when the original owner (s?) sold out to Calumet.

It was the other way around WEX bought Calumet U.K.

Ha e always found WEX to be very good well my local store is anyway. Not us any issueswhen I have ordered online either.

No independent, or actually any shops can compete with Amazon and it's network. Amazon controls everything down to the delivery driver now so there is no such a thing (or at least, much later), collection time from the warehouse compred to WEX/LCE/Camera World etc, which needs to goes to the courier's delivery distribution centre first.

Amazon knows where your order is going to, it knows its stock in his warehouse and distribution centres, it knows if it can get it to you from that warehouse next day. If it can, it will show you at checkout. It skips the vital step of courier collection, which is why you can order really late into the evening and still have things arrive in the morning, like in less than 12 hours at times.

100% this.

I have bought from WEX in the past and stuff has come when it needed to - no issues at all. But then I have never been in the position of needing it the next day, If I did I would go and collect so I am certain of getting it.

But WEX is no different to most other places - no business is 100% perfect.

I have found that Amazon, annoyingly, offer great service but another good one for the runners and cyclists out there is Sigma sports - excellent.

If I could order from local shops, or even good British retailers, at comparable prices with the same speed of shipping and matching returns policy then I would. I'd even relax on the shipping speed by a day or two but I've just not found that retailer for much of what I buy. Amazon knew what was important to customers and so they made damn sure they excelled at it. Most retailers here are so short-sighted that even after Amazon has shown them the way they still don't bother to follow that model.
I also try to buy ethically but TBH life is often too busy to check the every practise of every business and the ingredients of every item of food. Sometimes you just need a break and Amazon provides it. I don't generally have time to faff around chasing WEX for orders or MPB for refunds. With Amazon I don't have to.

If I absolutely MUST have something next day, I'll go to town and pick it up (or further if necessary).

I've never had any problems with WEX, they would be my recommendation to people........until recently, earlier this year.

I sent them a Fuji lens to trade, it was mint, in my opinion. I'd had it a few years, bought new from them. Long story short, they inspected it, got back to me and said the zoom was 'gritty'.

They offered to dispose of it for me. :jawdrop: (always wanted to use that smiley) :giggle:

Yeah right!

I asked them to send eveything I'd sent in for trade back to me, which in fairness, they did with no hassle. I checked the lens and being a 50-230, which is one of Fuji's 'budget' lenses, the zoom wasn't silky smooth like a red badge might be but not gritty and certainly not worth binning. I still use it, no problem.

Anyway, LCE for me from now on, used them a few times now and so far, so good. As long as that continues, they'll get my cash. (y)

WEX do not do free next day delivery.

If you subscribe to their newsleter or being a regular customer, they do actually or spend more than £100 with a code as mentioned above - which is what I did - so thank you for the pointless list you copied & pasted - not really very infomative and you are wrong :)

Update:

The manager contacted me via email and offered as a goodwill gesture £50 refund if I kept the order open- I at this point told him I had already ordered the items from Amazon, ( being delivered to my holiday destination address later today -( hence me being up at 3.20am posting this ) so I said no thank you- a full refund was issued with an apology for the errors in my delivery ( ie it wasnt despatched same day which was down to as he claimed a warehouse error )

They turned off the phones and live chat yesterday as they were all in a team meeting apparently - go figure

Thank you all for the comments

Les :)

Honestly this is the first bad thing I've heard about Wex.

I've bought bags and camera's from them over the years and it's been amazing service with next day delivery when they said.

Nothing wrong with Amazon but they're not geared up for some of the more esoteric photography items the way Wex etc are (ie medium format gear, camera bags etc)
