In the garden, I rather liked the subtle backlighting.

Good pose but on my monitor it looks quite soft. Would be better if you where to clone out those 2 white circles as they distract from the BT.
 
I like the backlighting too, but agree with the other poster that it is soft. I've recently set up a feeding station in the back garden, basically an RSPB pole, and then added some more natural looking perches that the birds will often sit on briefly whilst checking out the feeders, and then jump on. I made sure that the background is a uniform coloured bush, in my case a Leylandii. I then have the camera prefocused and tripod-mounted. If I don't move, I can often get some really nice closeups that are sharp with a nice oof background in that brief moment whilst they're perched.
